Solid Data solid-state disk provides the following benefits:
Company
Orc Software develops and markets standardized,
turnkey software for pricing, trading, and risk
management in real-time for international electronic
financial commodities, and energy markets. Orc Software
has chosen Solid Data solid-state disks to integrate into the Orc
System, one of the world's leading electronic trading
and risk management software packages.
The users of Orc Software's products consist of market participants who trade directly or indirectly on electronic marketplaces, including traditional brokerage houses, Internet brokers, traders and market makers.
Application
By displaying and analyzing real-time information feeds
from multiple trading exchanges, the Orc System
software provides a rich information environment and
powerful decision support tools.
The Orc System consists of the Orc Server and one or more clients (Orc Trader, Orc Broker and Orc Investor). It offers advanced functionality for analysis and pricing, trading and risk management, providing its users with the ability to trade simultaneously on multiple electronic marketplaces and to manage massive order flows for automated straight-through-processing. In addition, the system contains advanced calculation models for pricing various derivative instruments. The Orc System can manage real-time portfolio risk and automatically validate the order flow in a multi-currency environment over local or wide area networks.
The Orc Server application runs on a Sun Solaris platform, using an Informix database. It maintains all information on orders, positions and completed transactions, and is connected to multiple exchanges for access to prices and offers, and for efficient order execution. While Orc Server provides good performance on general-purpose servers, the system response time was limited by mechanical disk input/output speeds in high-volume trading applications. Professional traders are continually seeking a competitive edge, and even small delays during peak trading periods could impact trading profits.

Solution: Solid Data Solid-State Disks
In its continuing efforts to apply advanced technology to
meet customer requirements, Orc Software determined
that Solid Data solid-state disks substantially improve
performance on business-critical transaction databases,
enabling the Orc Server to deliver a true real-time
trading environment even in its highest-volume trading
applications. Orc Software also found that the Solid
Data Model e-100 is fast and easy to integrate
into the Orc Server platform: customers simply move the
frequently-updated database tables to Solid Data file
cache. With this performance enhancement, Orc client
traders obtain a time-based competitive advantage in
managing their stock and commodity portfolios - they are
at least "one keystroke ahead of the competition."
By providing zero-latency random access for key database files, the solid-state disk not only improved I/O performance, it also captured additional processor capacity that had been previously lost to "I/O wait" conditions.
Faster I/O translates into a higher level of processor availability to do useful work, which enables Orc Software to offer enhanced functionality while preserving real-time response to market changes.

Result
As a result of these impressive gains in performance
and improvement in critical metrics, Orc Software
decided to resell Solid Data solid-state disks in combination
with its software. While Orc Software generally does
not resell any hardware products, this software
developer determined that Solid Data solid-state disks add
so much value that it made business sense to offer this
advantage directly to its customers.
"We turned to Solid Data for their solid-state disk appliance since it is fast, simple to deploy, and easy to use," said Ulf Sigfridsson, executive vice president of Orc Software. "Solid Data's solid-state disk appliance coupled with the Orc system provides an unbeatable combination for our high-volume, real-time trading and risk management customers."
