Orc Software Chooses Solid Data's Excellerator™ e-100 for High-Performance Trading Solution

Online Trading Customers Get Turbocharged Performance
from Low-profile Appliance

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (June 19, 2001) - Solid Data Systems, the leading global provider of solid-state disk appliances based on solid-state technology, today announced that Sweden-based Orc Software has chosen Solid Data System's Excellerator™ e-100 to integrate into the Orc System™, a leading online trading and risk management application.

Orc Software develops software systems for pricing, trading and risk management in real time in the financial, commodities and energy markets. Orc Software customers take advantage of Solid Data's e-100 by using it in their Orc applications mainly for frequently updated databases.

Solid Data's Excellerator e-100 is a solid-state disk appliance designed to fit the scalability model of rapidly growing Internet infrastructure applications such as e-mail, wireless messaging, and stock trading. The e-100 repackages the proven technology of Solid Data's existing rack-mount products into a smaller form factor, offering up to two gigabytes of solid-state disk (SSD) in one standard unit of rack height (1U = 1.75 inches.) The e-100 also defines an entry-level price point that will promote widespread adoption of solid-state disks in high-volume e-business applications as an architectural solution in I/O-intensive environments.

"We turned to Solid Data for their solid-state disk appliance since it is fast, simple to deploy and easy to use," said Ulf Sigfridsson, executive vice president of Orc Software. "Solid Data's solid-state disk appliance coupled with the Orc system provides an unbeatable combination for our high-volume, real-time trading and risk management customers. The I/O performance significantly increases when integrating the e-100 with our system."

"We are pleased to provide Orc Software with the technology that they need to compete in such a high-growth market," said Gene Bowles, CEO of Solid Data Systems. "Online security trading applications are a natural fit for solid-state disk appliances, whose purpose is to speed e-transactions, and whose users cannot tolerate downtime."

File-caching Turbocharges e-Trading and Risk Management
File caching is an architectural solution employed when an application server becomes I/O bound and cached RAID storage cannot deliver the required I/O performance. In many applications, the "hot files" comprise less than five percent of an application's data, but account for more than 50 percent of the I/O activity. Moving the hot files onto a solid-state disk eliminates mechanical delays inherent in rotating disk drives.

The Orc system's real-time market connections provide Orc clients with competitive and effective trading systems. By placing clients' critical files on the e-100, constant movements in the international stock and commodities markets can be reflected instantly.

Pricing and Availability
Excellerator e-100 is shipping now with list prices starting at $11,900 for a 0.5GB unit. The e-100 is available through Orc Software, who resell the product worldwide, or through Solid Data and other authorized resellers.
