Santa Clara, CA,(June 23, 2000) -- Solid Data Systems today announced that Logica, a major systems integration and software company, has commenced deployment of Solid Data's solid-state disk (SSD) products at customer sites in Japan. Customers of Logica's Telepath Short Message Service Centre (SMSC) application are seeing performance increases of more than 200% when the wireless-messaging database is stored on Solid Data's solid-state disk (SSD) storage subsystems.
"When applications like SMSC use magnetic disk drives to store the messages, the computer spends a lot of its time just waiting for the storage devices to complete mechanical disk accesses," said Mike Casey, vice president of marketing at Solid Data Systems. "When the data is placed on SSD, which uses fast DRAM chips instead of magnetic disks, the SMSC server stops waiting for data - and processes two to four times as many messages per second. This improves the performance, scalability and resilience of the SMSC solution. It also allows wireless companies to deploy short message services in a smaller amount of floor space. This is especially important in Japan, where equipment-room space is a precious commodity."
Logica Japan began evaluating Solid Data's SSD products in Tokyo in early 1999, following approval of Solid Data products by Logica in Dublin, Ireland. Logica's objective was to improve the performance and efficiency of the server infrastructure used in Logica's Short Message Service Centre (SMSC) application. Based on successful evaluation and qualification testing, followed by extensive field experience on more than 100 SMSC systems, Logica now sells Solid Data's SSD as part of its SMSC systems worldwide.
Logica in Japan
Logica deployments outside Japan typically use a combination of magnetic disk and solid-state disk to achieve a doubling of SMSC performance. However, testing by Logica Japan determined that an SMSC server can achieve throughput increases of 200% or more, when all of the SMS application data is stored on Solid Data's SSD units. This approach also defines the most space-efficient infrastructure, which is a very important requirement in Japan. Logica Japan began upgrading existing customer systems in January 2000, and more than 40 Solid Data units have already been installed at sites in Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya. New SMSC systems will include Solid Data's SSDs as a standard component.
Paul Rogers, Regional Manager for Logica Japan said, "We are very pleased to work with Solid Data Systems as a key supplier. Solid Data's SSD products help Logica to deliver high-performance, high-reliability SMSC solutions to our customers. And it enables our customers to reduce the floor space requirements and infrastructure management costs, while quickly delivering mobile services to their marketplaces."

About Solid Data Systems
Solid Data Systems is the leading global provider of solid-state storage systems
that multiply the throughput of business-critical, transaction-intensive
applications. Solid Data's products are based on solid-state memory technology
and are designed to provide near-instant access to data storage. These compact,
rack-mount systems combine the speed of main memory with the persistence
(non-volatility) of external disk storage - enabling enterprises to multiply the
transaction performance of general-purpose systems, reduce complexity, and scale
their infrastructures cost effectively. Customers include global telecommunications
equipment integrators and financial service providers. Visit Solid Data on the web
